Clear enough of the roof edge, and the top of gutter, so that snow melt will drain down and into the gutters. I do this after every snowfall of 3-inches or more.
I have never used Sno-Melt products on a roof but a co-worker told me this year that this product is hockey puck sized Frisbees that you can safely fling onto your roof from the ground. I previously thought it was a granular product similar to what is used on the ground, and which involved great risk in application.
