Y2K was not a non-event for anyone in the industry. It took a lot of work to patch legacy systems to the point where they would function properly. Lots of programmers burning the midnight oil is what made Y2K seem like it was no big deal to the general public.
In many cases though the trouble has just been delayed. Some are already experiencing problems -- look up "pivot date." (In many cases the pivot was chosen to be a point where the programmer involved expected to be retired or deceased and thus would not have to deal with it.)
As far as XP -- I would say if it doesn't need internet access for anything I'd just cut it off. No antivirus program is 100% effective and the operating system will become more vulnerable as time passes.
By the way, the Windows XP issue is giving some industries (such as banking which has many, many XP-based ATMs) fits. Some are paying Microsoft for extended support.
