The overall looks of a larger rim/tire is a matter of personal preference.
The tires and rims should be matched to your expected needs and driving uses. I drive all city streets and freeways, and have 255/45-20 tires on my Volvo XC60 R-Design (along with a 10% stiffer suspension and larger anti-sway bars). I wanted and got a more European ride and handling similar to my Saab 9-3 Aero CVT.
If I went off road at all, I would have stuck to the regular 235/60-18 tires and regular suspension.
Pros:
- shorter tire sidewall and a wider tire results in better cornering grip and better braking performance.
- stiffer tire sidewall increases steering feel.
Cons:
- negatively impacting acceleration and fuel economy due to the greater weight of larger wheels.
- shorter, stiffer tire sidewall results in a harsher ride and possible tire/rim damage from rocks and potholes.
