The Art of Electronics is a great book, but for this application IMHO it's like trying to swat a fly with an asteroid!
Depending on what type of solution the OP is seeking, what's needed isn't even what I'd call "electronics" but more "electricity". To me, electronics is active devices like chips and transistors, and components that support them like resistors, capacitors, etc.
If control via a toggle switch would do, that switch plus two microswitches, a DC motor, and a wall wart with the correct specs would do it - just basic electromechanical parts. If you'd like, I'd be happy to draw up a circuit diagram and post it.
By the way for safety, regardless of what control scheme you decide on, I'd very highly recommend using a low-voltage (like 12V) circuit - not 120V line power.
Re books or tutorials, I can't think of any off the top of my head, but I work with a bunch of electrical/electronics guys - I'll ask around.
