I always thought of Caltech as more of a grad school kind of place, and MIT a little easier to get into, larger, and maybe a better undergrad choice (though larger is not always good). Obviously both have great grad schools... I know folks who went to RPI also and liked it... But what do I know - I went to school in Canada!
What discipline is she doing? I'm assuming engineering or physical sciences... wise to carefully consider one's career path in engineering early on these days with all the outsourcing going on!
Pressure is the norm in engineering programs, but obviously those top schools can overdo it... 5-10 years down the road, one's undergrad degree is mostly in the noise - it's what you actually learned and how that shaped you for later that matter... That is awesome that she has that choice to make! She must be very bright!
