I had 2 experiences with internal hubs- I was not impressed with them. I put a Rohloff on a mountain bike, it was expensive, heavy, leaked oil, and I didn't feel it offered anything performance-wise beyond a properly tuned derailleur shifting system.
Built up an old Bianchi road frame for around town with a SRAM (Sachs) 3-speed hub. Adjustment was super finicky. It would be fine one day, cable tension would need to be slightly tweeked the next day, then tweeked back the other way the following day. Also had a tendency to periodically shift gears by itself. I decided I had enough of that and went back to a derailleur system.
I have Planet Bike fenders, with the extra rubber flap at the bottom. They're some sort of plastic, full stainless hardware.
