The impetus to my above question.

We bought a new microwave over a week ago when our old one failed and I missed the opportunity to deliver the failed unit to the electronics bin at a local recycling center last Saturday. Yesterday was another Saturday and, since only two days after Thanksgiving, I checked the Recycling Center's web site and saw they had regular hours posted. I loaded up the old unit and headed off on the four mile drive.

About two miles from home, when doing 45+ in a 45MPH zone, and approaching a steady green light, I spotted a pseudo SUV approaching the light (red for them) from the right hand side. They were exiting the driveway of a hotel which often hosts the visiting teams playing in Michigan's football stadium. As I kept approaching the other driver kept inching further forward. I thought to my self "that clown isn't going to pull out in front of me is he?"

Sone of a Gun?! The idiot did. It would have been a tight merge if the other driver had goosed their vehicle HARD immediately after the turn, but nooooo. He was a dawdler.

I stood on my brakes, checked my left mirror for an opening, yanked hard left, and goosed my car to miss this fool and pass him. I looked in my mirror and saw a New York plate. An out of towner who was likely heading to the Michigan-Ohio State game based on time of incident and choice of hotel.

No harm, no foul, until I looked at my dash and saw the check engine light illuminated. Undoubtedly because of my recent evasive maneuvers with a nearly cold engine on a cold day.

I get to the Recycling Center and they are closed! Someone had enough spare time on their hands to custom paint an attractive steel or wooden sign stating the days during Thanksgiving Weekend the Center would be closed, and to attach the sign to the locked wooden gate, but not enough time to update the web site. Arrgh! So back home with a failed microwave still in the trunk but no more driving incidents.

Once home I plug in my Code Reader, it identifies a single fault code, P1110 indicating a failed/failing Charge Air By-pass Valve (no surprise since this valve has been farting noticeably during the past couple weeks). Then before I can press the 'Clear' button, the reader freezes!

No buttons work, I remove a battery, the display clears, I reinsert the battery, and the reader immediately returns to its full screen display of unwanted info that will not clear. I replaced all four batteries with two Duracells and two Energizers, all with freshness dates in the middle of the next decade, and no change. The darn thing is frozen electronically. No reset buttons or access pinholes visible in the exterior of the case.

I removed all four batteries, threw the now useless code reader in its case, and walked away. My wife encourages me to try again after I have cooled down and thought it through looking for an answer I didn't see before. Smart woman!

After 10 or 15 minutes I found the Owner's Manual, found the reset instructions (remove one battery and hold the On/Off button depressed for 30 seconds), reinserted the batteries to do this reset, and discovered that the unit will clear itself when left completely deenergized for the 10 or 15 minutes I had the batteries out of the case.

Code is now cleared. Reader is working satisfactorily again. I will be buying a new Charge Air By-pass Valve to replaced the OEM unit in my '08 Aero that has 122K miles of use.

I also got to work on a 'Honey-Do List' item just to thank my wife.
