I got run off the expressway yesterday Posted by MI-Roger [Email] ![]() ![]() In Reply to: I should add, No Snaab, Sat, 5 Mar 2016 05:09:15 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
I was attempting to merge from north bound I-275 onto west bound I-94. A small courier panel truck was exiting from southbound I-275 onto westbound I-94 at the same time. Both of us needed to use the same entrance ramp to merge onto I-94. As usual, the southbound courier entered into the entrance ramp with no attempt at a proper merge, just pulled in right in front of me. OK, this happens all the time so I was prepared for it but this guy was dogging it at a slow speed for some reason
The worst part of this interchange is that the entrance ramp joins I-94 on the inside radius of a slow curve. This curve creates a hypnotic effect on the westbound drivers making them oblivious to merging traffic. I have found that I have to be extra alert when driving I-94 at this spot because this same hypnotic effect impairs me as well.
The lone traffic in the right hand lane was a double bottom gravel train (illegal in many states due to their weight and propensity to fish-tail and flip). I was spaced to merge in front of him but the courier was not accelerating enough to give me a safe entrance length between him and the gravel train. The gravel train driver was refusing to slow down to allow me to merge in front of him, or to accelerate so that I could smoothly merge behind him, or to move over one lane so I could enter beside him. So off I went down the shoulder, with its rumble strips, at almost 70MPH.
I merged behind the gravel train, passed both vehicles within a quarter mile as the center lane was clear, but offered no salute to either of the clueless drivers. I guess it was just too Spring like yesterday afternoon.
