is a gamble we take every day. There will be about 100 million inflators recalled. To date there have been no known injuries in Saab cars with Takata airbags. It is of a similar construction to inflators that have injured people, so it is being recalled.
The 9-3 as from 2003 uses 2 stage airbags that deploy according to seat position and if it is occupied and belted. But the passenger bag will almost always deploy with the driver bag in a collision, but if the seat is not occupied it will only deploy stage 1. The Saab dash is much more substantial too, there being many more layers of plastic and insulation for the shrapnel to go thru. The 9-2x passenger inflator is under one thin layer of dash top plastic. You could imagine how easy it would be for shrapnel to fly thru.
The other factor appears to be high heat and humidity causes the inflator to rupture, sending shrapnel. High humidity area cars will be recalled first. I own a 2006 9-3 Combi, and I am not too worried about the airbag,
I am worried about terrible drivers, we lose 40,000 people a year in car crashes in the usa.
