Maybe they had been out of service, or out of the equipment, only a few weeks or less and not long enough for the charge to dissipate. I remember seeing the instructor open the box as he was describing what he had acquired.
I realized years later that a lot of my teachers were not any where near as old as they seemed to us at the time. Perhaps another of the shop teachers pranked this guy and we witnessed the results.
