IMHO, GM should have kept Oldsmobile alive and dropped Buick from the US market. Keeping Buick as a Chinese brand made sense for two reasons; the Chinese love their Buicks, and the Chinese Buicks are significantly different than their US counterpart with the same name.
When GM dropped Olds they converted nearly every Olds vehicle into a Buick by just renaming it. Buick had a very thin vehicle line-up in the US at that time. Keeping Chevy, Buick and Cadillac, while dropping Saturn, Pontiac and Oldsmobile, resulted in a broad market segment (medium priced models) in which GM has no brand covering it.
I have only ever owned Pontiac and Saab brand cars over the past 40 years, and only looked at Saturn as an alternative to these two brands, so I am clearly biased.
