My local transfer station recycles metal for free, so the actual getting-rid-of-it isn't a problem, although your post reminded me there is also a local scrap metal place that actual pays you for scrap metal. I'll swing by there and see if they'll accept them as-is or if they still need to be drained.
I did a quick search last night after I my original post and other people said the same thing about drilling (very small) holes to depressurize and drain the shocks. Also, someone suggested hanging on to the chromed steel shafts.
