I am having a recurring problem with the keypad used to open our garage door. The 'switches' fail after a few years, and at $35-$40 per pop I would rather not have to replace the entire keypad every 3-4 years.
Below is a photo of the switch mechanism.
The circuit board is printed with circular patches of interleaved copper fingers behind every button. The bottom side of each button is a black rubber pad which shorts across these fingers to make contact when the rubber buttons are depressed, At least that is my theory. The pads being black may indicate the pads have a high carbon content to be a better conductor.
Is there any way to clean and/or coat the interleaved fingers and/or black pads to achieve better electrical contact when the buttons are depressed? Glue some copper leaf onto the base of each button?
Thanks,
