I think I'm with most others here in disliking larger wheels/tires for weight and cost reasons... I joked to my wife once that if manufacturers had their way, our cars would all look like Conestoga wagons.
But the trend toward larger wheels/tires is for a reason: bigger brakes. As cars increase in horsepower, larger brakes are needed to stop them, and larger wheels (and thus tires) are needed to clear those large brakes.
Obviously that doesn't mean you have to put 20" wheels on a car that comes standard with 18's. But it's why you don't see any cars with 13" wheels around any more.
