Outdoor wood-fired boilers or OWBs, can be a significant source of fine particulate air pollution. Fine particulates are particles smaller than 2.5 microns and there are many areas of PA that already frequently exceed healthy levels of fine particulates. These fine particulates are inhaled deep into the lungs and then can pass directly into the blood stream increasing the risk of cardiovascular disease. Central Pennsylvania typically has worse air pollution levels than even urban areas like Philadelphia and New York City, primarily due to fine particulates and ground level ozone. Mobile sources, trucks and cars, are the main contributors to fine particulate and ozone air pollution, but wood burning can increase levels locally. While OWBs and other wood-burning devices can seem like an economical source of heat, they are already regulated in PA and other areas due to their contribution to air pollution.
