Getting piston out of fixed caliper Posted by bender [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
I have an old pair of calipers from my 9-3. They are fixed calipers with two pistons. They'd been sitting around for many years in my basement, so I think the brake fluid inside has probably turned into a gel. I managed to get one of the pistons out — the one closest to where the fluid comes in. The other one is hard to get out. Maybe I need to use some penetrating oil and let it sit in the chamber in case there's any gelled fluid?
Can the two halves of the fixed caliper be separated? Or is that not recommended?
Any tips? Here's what I'm thinking:
- Put the piston back in so that hopefully I can push air in and get the other one out. I wasn't able to plug the hole to prevent air leaks with the piston out.
Or...
- Get a tool to try to pull the piston out.
Or...
- Take it somewhere that can use their tools and experience to pull the piston out.
