You can buy a Honda and have nothing but trouble. You can buy a Chevy Cavalier and get ten years with just maintenance. It depends on how it all falls together. Quality in American cars is getting better while quality in Japanese and other imports is getting worse because they are being built here now. European cars do generally have excellent build quality, but just average reliability. So do you consider build quality to be the quality of materials and fit and finish or reliability or a combination of both?
I do agree that the people that build American cars do not share the same work ethics as the import makers. You can thank labor unions for that. Union workers can do shitty work and are guranteed $30/hour. The bad thing is that most Japanese companies were railroaded into building a good portion of their cars here, putting a dent in their reliability records.
