For those of you interested in OnStar Personal Calling, here are the rates quoted to me on the telephone by one of their on 3/30/01. She added that the reason they do not publish these rates online or elsewhere is because "cellular rates change so often and are subject to change." (That hasn't stopped other companies.)
Minutes are purchased in blocks and can be used from anywhere in "their network" (i.e. where they have made arrangements with local cellular providers) to anywhere in the 48 states without long distance or roaming charges.
30 min no expire $ 29.99
30 min 2 mo expire $ 19.99
100 min 2 mo expire $ 34.99
100 min 1 yr expire $ 44.99
300 min 2 mo expire $ 94.99
300 min 1 yr expire $ 119.99
500 min 2 mo expire $ 134.99
500 min 1 yr expire $ 174.99
1200min 1 mo expire $ 225.00
Clearly, these rates are not competive with available digital "one-rate" plans from Verizon, Sprint and others...and this is for analog only service. When I asked about digital service, the representative told me that they did not have plans for digital service because analog covered 90% of US and digital only covered 50%. Uh-huh...has anyone there heard of a dual mode system? And, she added, they are marketing Personal Calling as a premium service that is not intended to replace personal cell phones...hence no plans for a removeable handset either.
Sounds to me like buying the 30 min. for emergencies and then wiring in a personal phone into the system (phone, hands-free kit, Triad) is the way to go.
