I saw a 2002 9-3 SE today. First of all, there is no more base model, only SE's and the Viggen. The one I saw was a steel gray auto. My wife and I went to the dealer so she could test drive an '01 9-3 SE 5-speed. As we pulled in (in our '00 9-5 auto) I noticed the car right away cause of the different rims. They were a new 5-spoke design that is a vast improvement over the current fair. (During my budgeting process, I padded in room for 17" Moda by BBS R4's.) Each spoke was a flat and looked like a long triangle. The rims still appeared to be 16", but were shod in Pirelli P6000's.
After our test drive in the '01, I asked about when the 2002's would be out. Our salesman leaned over and said "That's one right there. I think it's a pre-production car." Sooo, we strolled over for a more detailed look. The exterior is basically identical to the '01s except for the rims. Inside, there was a bit more to report.
The cloth door inserts were replaced with Viggen-sytle leather, and, perhaps most significant, the front seats now feature the word Turbo and have aggressive looking cloth inserts!
I think the new model will be available sometime in September. The car in question had "M.F.G." plates out of Conneticut. Way cool! Too bad I didn't have my digital camera handy. Let that be a lesson to me!
