I would do the Canada route without knowing how where you are in Maine relative to Quebec or I-90. I would take I-90 across to Buffalo/Niagara and then the 402(?) to the 401 over to Windsor, take the Ambassador Bridge across into Detroit and head to Chicago on I-94. I'm not sure of the distance advantage, but you can drive much faster in Canada and you don't have to worry about the pesky Ohio Patrolmen who like to give out a lot of speeding tickets. Watch out for police in New Buffalo Michigan, (near Indiana). I like driving in Canada. Once I drove from Detroit to Montreal in 8 1/2 hours (570 miles). For reference, Detroit to Chicago is about 300 miles.
I do the Detroit to Rochester, NY trip quite often and it saves at least 1 1/2 hours compared to going through Cleveland, Ohio where I grew up.
Don't forget your proof of citizenship and drive safely,
