Do you have a family to support? Whatever you decide, make your decision with them in mind. And also, doing something because you enjoy it, without the pressure of having your livleyhood depend on it, is not the same as doing it because you have to to support your family. If you are fortunate enough that the two come together, that is called success and you will be truly happy. But also be aware that there are no shortcuts to becoming a successful technician. Learn all you can and try to set up some kind of apprenticship at a local dealer. I have been doing my own repairs for more than 40 years and believe me, it just ain't the same today! At one time all you needed to know was did you have fuel, air and fire to diagnose a problem. Today, the engines realy haven't changed much - pistons, rods, valves but, the managment system is something else. A good technician, that is also a top notch diagnostician (not a parts changer) is worth his/her weight in gold and is a true professional. These types are highly sought after at quality dealerships because they spend less time finding the problem and fixing it so it doesn't come back. In another response someone mentioned their grandmother and the change she made at 55, it's never too late to do what you really want to. It helps you live longer and let's you enjoy the life.
Think about it, then take your best shot. If you fall on your face so what, your moving in the right direction!
Sorry for rambling here, it struck a nerve I guess.
