Two different types Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 23 Aug 2001 11:59:18 In Reply to: Heated Seats, Pharmer, Mon, 20 Aug 2001 11:08:41 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
The 99 had a heated driver's seat at least in 1973 - possibly earlier. All years and models of 900 and 9000 came with heated driver's and passenger's seats.
There are TWO different heated seat systems. There is the thermostat in the seat system, and the controller system. The thermostat in the seat turns the seat on or off depending on the temperature of the seat - you have no control of it, and there is only one heat setting. The controller system has a four position rotary wheel in the dash (0, 1,2, 3) that allows off (0), low, medium, and high heat.
The 9000 has the controller system for both passenger and driver's seats. The OG900 has the thermostat system for the passenger seat. Up to around '88-'89 the 900 driver's seat was thermostat - at some point they went to the controller system for the driver. The NG900 has a modified thermostat - it has an on-off switch on the dash. At some point in the late 90's Saab actually made seat heaters optional. Heresy!
Why do you care about the systems? First off, the controller system is much nicer - you can get more or less heat as you wish, or just turn it off. Second, they aren't directly interchangeable. The thermostat system has just two wires - power and ground, and the thermostat is in the seat. In the controller system, there are three wires coming from the seat - power, ground, and a temperature sensor signal. That signal goes to the dash-mounted controller. The controller applies 12 volts or 0 volts to the seat to make the seat's temperature (as measured by the sensor) match the setting on the controller.
You don't mention which car you are putting these into, or where you want to get them from. But unless you want to do some re-wiring, try and stick with the same temp system.
