Two of the highjackers boarded in Portland ME and flew to Boston where they highjacked. Portland probably has average security. They could have flown from one of at least half a dozen small airports in Maine to Boston that probably have less than ideal security. Probably other small airports in
New England would have been fine places to get there too.
Our local airport terminal (which is a double-wide actually) at RKD only got an xray machine in the last two years. You fly out of there, and go into the terminal in Boston, where you get on your connecting flight with the same airline in Boston, and you wouldn't have to deal with the security people at Boston at all. (As long as both flights are at the same terminal)
Personally, I don't mind not having to go through security at each and every airport since there is often not enough time scheduled between flights and we are often in a hurry as a result of that scheduling that is forced on us. If there were plenty of time between flights the way they should be normall scheduled, I wouldn't mind a security check at each airport much.
However, since flying is a commercial business, improving securely might cost a lot of money, and if it increased airfare by more than 15% (it shouldnt), people probably wouldn't fly very much. (which would hurt US travel and tourism jobs tremendously) It would also increase crowding and demands on the highways, leading to more deaths there, since it's still safer to fly than drive.
If airport security can't be improved cheaply, there's no pretty solution.
