Dear friends,

There cannot be one of us who is not saddened by the tragic events
that have unfolded in New York and Washington.

My reason for writing concerns the Firefighters who rushed into the
burning buildings as others were rushing to get out. In this race to
save the lives of others, hundreds of Firefighters appear to have lost
their lives. Their families in turn have lost their loved ones.

In the New York Times, New York Firefighter Paul Mendoza said his
unit, Rescue Company 4, in Queens, had just gotten over the deaths of
two men in a fire on Father's Day. Now everyone from his unit who had
worked Tuesday morning was missing or dead.

As the head of Planet Ark, an Australian environmental organisation,
you may be wondering why I am writing to you about this matter.

I am proud to say that I grew up as the son of a Fireman in England.
Firefighters are amongst the bravest and most selfless people in our
societies. Without thought for their own safety, they rush into
burning buildings with the intent of saving lives, even at the risk of
losing their own.

As I watched the World Trade Centre collapse I instinctively knew that
many Firefighters would be losing their lives. Little did I know that
the New York Fire Department would lose so many Firefighters. Nearly
30 times the number ever lost before by the Fire department in a
single event, are missing or dead, officials said yesterday.

Not all the Firemen died within the building. Fire department
chaplain, the Rev. Mychal Judge, was giving the last rites to a
Firefighter who had been injured by a falling body when both were
swallowed and killed by cascading rubble.

I would encourage you to read the following New York Times article
about the tragic impact this disaster has had on New York's
Firefighters and their families:

When you have done that, please donate whatever you can afford to:

The Uniformed Firefighter‘s Association street address and tax
deductability details are listed at the end of this letter.
Please do not send any money to Planet Ark.

The families of these fallen Firefighters will be struggling
financially as well as emotionally. These local organisations are the
ones best placed to help these families. Let's all help them as much
as we can.

This Planet Ark letter will reach tens of thousands of people via our
own mailing list. Please pass it on to other people you know so that
we may ease the suffering of these poor families.

Yours sincerely,
