Forget buying a car -- it won't be US-spec and the cost of shipping and bringing into compliance is not worth it. Buy a Eurrailpass and hop trains -- you can sleep on them and they go pretty much everywhere you want to go.
A few thoughts: Forget going in late-June for the Midsommer holiday unless you like hanging out with tons of drunk and puking people. Swedes drink to excess, unfortunately. Late-May is better, the weather is good, the days are long, and the mosquitos may not be out yet (important if you head to the countryside). Stockholm is a great place. Tons of things to see in the city. Take a boat from the City Hall area to Mariefred to see the castle and royal portrait gallery. A boat ride through the archipeligo to the Aland Islands (Finland) is also a nice daytrip. If you need to head south right away, I thought Kalmar was a nice place. If you can do it, Visby (Gotland) is great and hardly visited at all by Americans. If you have time, however, I suggest that you head north from Stockholm and do a circle trip through the arctic and then down the spine of Norway. Stckholm - Kiruna - Narvik (Norway). The ride the last few hours into Narvik is spectacular. Take the bus from Narvik to Bodo and then get back on the train for Trondheim. You might take a detour to Andalsnes -- the train ride is (again) spectacular. Lillehammer is nothing special but oslo is nice. The train to Bergen is scenic and there is a train / ferry detour that allows you to see some fjord scenery too. I personnally don't find Copenhagen that interesting but the people are great so it's worth visiting.
Have fun. Enjoy.
