One notable difference... I general studs are applied by cutting a circular hole in the tire, and pressing a stud in. Nokian has been doing what they call an 'eco-stud', where they mold a chamber into the tire when they make it, so a T shaped stud can be inserted. the chamber gives the stud room to move in and out of the tire, so they are much quieter than normal studs, and the stud itself wears less as the tire wears.
