I had to wait until 1980 to buy my first Saab, a 1978 99 combi-coupé (as the hatchback is called here) - until then only an older sedan was affordable.
It was great having all that loading space - we even shifted a gas stove with eye-level grill on one occasion.
The low sill was specially good for a back-sufferer like me.
Since then I have had 5 more Saabs; all but one have been hatchbacks.
The story behind that one is that originally I was looking for replacements for my 1985 900T and what was by then my wife's 99. I found a beautiful 1989 900T 16S (elsewhere Aero, or maybe SPG) 2-door, so I passed the 900T on to my wife instead.
The 2-door was certainly stiffer, and more fun to drive, and my favourite of all my Saabs, but I would not have wanted to be completely without the use of a hatchback.
Now I drive a 1993 9000 CSE 2.3T, but would probably have gone for a 9-5 by now if there was a hatchback version. I really don't know what to go for next - downsize to a 9-3 or very reluctantly leave the Saab fold...
