First and foremost, buying a Euro-spec car and saving money by doing so does not mean that you will be able to convert it to US Specifications. The $5,000 price I stated earlier is merely an average price that is paid to convert regularly imported vehicles like Porsche and BMW; a SAAB is not on the top of the list of "most commonly imported" therefore could equate to a larger amount. That is *IF* a Registered Importer will do the work. I've never heard of someone importing a SAAB, but I'm sure it's happened.

You will not pay much more for a US-Spec SAAB than a Euro-spec one. There will be some additional charges because they have to make them to conform to NHTSA, DOT, and EPA standards. It's a pain in their ass and thus they pass it along to the customer. It's not much difference in price though.

Anywhere you get stationed in Europe will have a dealership nearby. Trust me, Americans = money to these people. You will be exempt from all taxes! As a military member overseas, you are entitled to this (any NATO military, not just US). Take advantage of it (not just for cars either)! I have included a clicky to a car dealership that caters to Americans. I also included a great article I came across concerning just this topic. Not all of that applies to you, but you can pick and choose the information you need.

Bottom line, savings for a brand new (we're talking US Dealer sticker price vs. what you will pay in Germany which has fixed prices) car will be about $2,000-$6,000 and free shipping to the nearest US Port when you return. Read all about it....
