NY Times article on EZ-Pass type systems and privacy Posted by IrieTom [Email] ![]() ![]() ![]() |
There's an interesting article in today's N.Y. Times about electronic "evesdropping" by automated toll-collecting systems, "black box" data recorders, OnStar, and GPS systems.
In a similar thread a while ago, I stated that EZ-Pass would eventually be used at fast-food drive-throughs and gas stations, etc. This seems to be verified...
"In the Northeast, the E-ZPass system, which
has six million tags in circulation, is being
tested at the drive-through windows at two
McDonald's (news/quote) locations on Long
Island, and the agency that oversees the
system is studying whether to expand
elsewhere, including gas stations and parking
garages. "
Also, I once again claim that cameras are in use in the EZ-Pass lanes of the NYS Thruway. There is a system which compares the license plate number of cars passing through the toll booths with the license # regestered to the EZ-pass "tag" in the car. I went through a few months of hassles with them when they claimed that I was using an "unauthorized" car- I had forgotten to tell them when my plates changed.
When passing through the EZ-pass lane at night, an uncomfortably bright light shines in my eyes. The only reason I can think of is for a camera.
Beware big brother! It's closer than you think...
