They are not really interchangeable. The Mercedes station wagon will hold a LOT more, and our dog (90 lb German Shepherd) prefers the Mercedes although he has also fit in the SAAB. Put a roof box on the station wagon and you can take anything anywhere in much more comfort and safety than a minivan or SUV.
The diesel version of the Mercerdes is a great car - virtually indestructible. Pretty slow, however, and hard to find good examples anymore - I could not find a good one. Mine has 202,000 miles and still works and looks great - avoid the 4matic transmission (which I unfortunately have) as they are too complex, expensive to repair, and unreliable compared to the regular automatic. If it has the load-leveling suspension get the nitrogen cells and valve checked out, as that is a $2000 repair - not an issue for your '87, I think.
