KL, Kent is merely voicing his opinion just like you, so I find your ‘too personally’ claim and subsequent calls to end this debate a rather weak way out.
It’s people like you who still hold a grudge that slow down this country. In case you didn’t notice, a conglomeration of media groups painstakingly went over the ballots in Florida and just about a week to go came to the conclusion that Bush won in almost all scenarios, including recounts in just the counties Gore wanted. So this nonsense of ‘cheating’ and ‘stealing’ his way into office is just that—nonsense.
Furthermore, if we had someone like Al Gore in office right now we certainly would not be doing as well. He has too many liberal constituencies to please to accomplish a successful military campaign in Afghanistan. Bush is doing very well and garnering much respect from leaders around the world, with improved relations between China and Russia. You cannot say that he didn’t handle the downed spy plane in China with nothing but aplomb and patience. Bush is developing into a fine statesman, thanks to in part Condoleezza Rice, Colin Powell, Donald Rumsfeld, and others working with him. The presidency is about a lot more than just the president, it’s about the team with which he surrounds himself. Of course, one recent president comes to mind that was all about ‘me, me, me.’
About his smug confidence… I don’t think it was smug, I think it was smart. He was loosing precious time during the transition and couldn’t hold off while Gore and others held up the elections in court. It was the only sensible thing to do.
The economy drivel you keep speaking of is absolutely non-factual. The economy was going down BEFORE the election, thanks to weakening .coms and other businesses. Also, the correlation between Bill Clinton and the economy doesn’t really add up to me, since it was on an upturn at the end of Bush’s term in office. Also, the economic prosperity was partially due to measures taken by the Republican-controlled congress during 1994-95.
By the way, I am from Texas and LOVE rednecks, they are much more friendlier than the likes of you.
