Driving out of town for a last weekend of deer hunting, I was suddenly and viciously attacked from the air - I suspect a cross-species alliance between the urban pigeons down here and the whitetail deer "up nort hey", the former having launched a pre-emptive strike on behalf of the latter. It must have been an infra-red guided turd, because the Saab Electronic Early Warning tone didn't warn I was being painted by hostile radar. No, the ice-cold wet sting of the strike itself, seemingly piercing the apex of the skull, was the first and only warning. The sunroof was open perhaps 6" - imagine footage of Gulf War airstrikes on office building ventilation ducts - it was a "magic bullet" of Warren Commission-proportions that found its mark.
I check six but no joy, the bandit scrammed. I look around for Ed G, thinking I may have unwittingly driven through a streetside moose-dropping ritual, but no, there was nothing around but innocent looking Civics and Taurus'. Exploring the wound, I pull my hand away to find a green/brown lozenge of digested plant material clinging on; whew..., looks like turd, not grey matter. Why it's just a scratch, really - three days from now I'll be able to wash this out with a little shampoo and pull through just fine.
But mark my words: Someday we'll meet again, little bird, and revenge will be mine.
