Not that early Posted by Ari [Email] (#2847) [Profile/Gallery] (more from Ari) on Thu, 29 Nov 2001 09:24:38 In Reply to: Early SAAB Models with 3cyl.2stroke engines, john, Thu, 29 Nov 2001 08:44:08 Members do not see ads below this line. - Help Keep This Site Online - Signup |
Saab had two-strokes from 1947 through 1967. Maybe I'm showing my age, but I can still remember 1967 pretty well, so I'm not sure that's 'very early' in my book.
The three cylinder two-stroke came in at least two forms, the 750cc and 850cc, and as can be expected with any engine that had around a 15 year life-span (the first engines were two cylinders) there were a bunch of variations. Saab did a lot of rallying, so the rally engines were specially treated, and some of those improvements made it into certain production models (Monte Carlo 850, etc).
There is a huge amount of data out there - after all, a car company was supporting multiple models (93, 95, 96, Sonett (97)) for more than a decade. If you're looking for history, check out the book "Two Stroke to Turbo". There are other good Saab history books - check Amazon.com Otherwise, there are bunches of factory manuals out there, but those are useful if you want to tear down and rebuilt an engine, and make for some pretty dry reading.
