OT:Anyone recommend good MIG welder?

Am thinking about learning to weld--at least enough to meet my own automotive needs--exhaust and body repairs. Anyone have any good (or bad) experiences with any of the big brand name machines? Am thinking about just running down to Sears and getting a gassless/gas MIG welder.
TIA
BobH
