Engine sludge? Posted by Nick [Email] ![]() ![]() |
On Edmunds.com I came accross the topic of "engine sludge" found in some fairly new Toyota Sienna vans with low mileage. This suprised me as I thought Toyota's were trouble free and, being a long time Saab owner, I've never experienced this on my Saab engines or any other brand. What exactly is engine sludge? What affect does it have on the engine?
Here's one of the posts from edmunds.com's town hall under maintenance and repair- engine sludge:
"I have been lurking around Edmunds for several weeks now. The reason I continue to return is because I have a sludge problem and any information I can dig up on sludge is of value to me. I write this to let others who are experiencing engine sludge know that they are not alone. Regardless of what anyone else says, something does not add up when vehicles with less than 2 years old, with less than 36k miles, develop sludge. Why only/mainly Toyota's. If I would not have read about others like myself I would have believed what Toyota said about Owner Neglect. If I am to blame, so is Toyota.
I used to follow the every 3000 miles oil change rule. On my other vehicle, I still follow that rule. When I was nearing my 1st 3K miles in my Sienna I was making plans to have my oil changed. That was until I picked up the manual to check the particulars. When I read what Toyota schedule was I admit that I was impressed. This being my 1st brand new car, I'm thinking: 1st - modern cars must require less maintenance. 2nd - I shouldn't be surprise because this is a Toyota (Remember, you started to get that Caravan but held out and paid a premium for the Toyota).
There is no doubt in my mind that if I would have purchased the Caravan, I would be driving today. I might have other problems, for sure. But my vehicle would not be parked in front of my door like street furniture.
I have had three of my oil changed performed at Toyota dealerships. One was after my vehicle started showing signs of sludge (light blue smoke). One was over 8k miles (shame on me). But my vehicle becoming sludge, I can't believe it. I feel mislead. Why don't they just post 3k mile oil changes and be done with it.
I have sent away for my arbitration papers. I was told when ordering my packet that only 1% of sludge victims ever win at Toyota. I asked the fellow is that his own experience or Toyota's experience. He replied, "Toyota's"."
What would cause "engine sludge" on a low milage car with normal oil change intervals?
Sorry for the long post,
Nick
