My wife drives a 2000 A4 1.8T Sedan quattro Tiptronic. IMHO this (the car, that is) is the sweetest shape on the road. (Though her's is pretty sweet too.) The 2002 A4 has lost those gorgeous lines.
The engine and drivetrain are pretty much bulletproof in stock form. As you pump up the power of this wonder motor, things look a little less cheery. The Tiptronic is torque rated for around 220 ft lbs, which limits the chip upgrade to 1 bar (15 psi). The 5 speed has no such limitation. There are guys running 300 bhp or more without significant drivetrain problems, though a stronger clutch is needed. The issue with the 1.8T arises from its little KKK-03 turbo. 1 bar is really pushing that little guy, and heat soaking the intercooler is a real problem if the car is run hard for very long. Going to a higher state of tune requires a turbo upgrade and larger exhaust system, and a bigger intercooler is also a wise choice.
Our A4 has 24K miles, and I have been less than thrilled with the build qality so far. We have had a lot of niggly little problems that I did not expect to see....I will definitely purchase an extended warranty.
The car is a true joy to drive, though I fnd it too small inside. On a twisty back road the sports suspension makes the car feel like a slot car - if your buddy's car has the 15 inch wheels, he should seriously consider a Plus 1 or Plus 2 upgrade, and some sport struts.
AudiWorld has a links page and an excellent technical faq. For go-fast mods, APR is my choice - their driver selectable multi- program chip system is terrific.
