I can think of a million reasons. Mostly, though, I hate dealing with service personnel, driving, standing in line, waiting, waiting, waiting... I am perfectly capable of turning a wrench, so why go through the aggravation? It's not like you can just come to the "SAAB mechanic" and have your oil changed immediately while you wait (doing what?!!) Most of the time you have to either leave the car there for the day or wait several hours while they free up a lift and work on your car.
Also, I don't trust anybody will go above and beyond for the $20 you pay for an oil change. No one will lubricate locks/hinges and other points that require lubrication at every oil change. No one will really check the suspension, steering, etc. the way I do it. It's just not worth their time. OK, so a good mechanic might notice something out of spec while doing an oil change. But I have news for you: no *good* mechanic will waste his valuable time to change your oil. They have inexperienced young guys there for this purpose. The young guys have girls on their mind -- they don't think about your car while doing the oil change. All you can expect for your paltry $20 is a quick and dirty job. You'll be lucky if they don't overfill it or cross-thread the drain bolt. In order to get the level of service I personally give my car during an oil change, I figure I would have to pay $150-200 to an experienced SAAB master tech. As I said, I am perfectly capable of doing this myself, all for about $30, including a MANN filter, Mobil 1, a new drain plug washer, etc.
Now, if my car was leased, I would probably go to Wal-Mart for their $11.95 oil change and get my shopping done while they screw leasing company's car.
