Caught an interesting interview with Bob Lutz on a Québec Auto Show. The man, who speaks fluent French, is very interesting to listen to. He is a true car enthusiast and talks straight. A very refreshing change from the usual empty clichés coming from automobile CEOs. When asked what cars he liked driving, Mr Lutz cited the Cadillac CTS, (and he is very aware that it's style will not please everybody but it will make a bold statement for Cadillac who desperately needs it), the Cadillac STS, a fully loaded GMC Sierra and..... the Saab Aero. He went on and I quote «I like SAABs and I'm very happy that GM owns SAAB». I think this bauds very well for SAAB and the timing is perfect with all the money invested in SAAB in recent years. Lutz could be the missing spark that will truly ignite rocket ship SAAB. Now, I just hope he can inspire Mr Mauer as much as he did the designers of the BEAUTUFUL Pontiac Solstice, which was designed and built under his guidance, in only 4 months. The 9-3 and 9-3x concepts are UGLY imho. Interestingly, when he was at Chrysler, who have trouble building reliable cars but came up with outstanding designs under his leadership, he never changed a designer. All he did is let them work freely. The Pontiac Aztec is probably the best example of how you to hamper the work of designers. The characteristics of the monumental blunder were dictated to the designers from the marketing department.
