these are in a different context than what the word normally means. For instance, "windows" refers to an operating system; and "word" refers to a computer program for word processing. No one can trademark the term "windows" for windows. No one can trademark "turbo" for cars. It's simply not possible. VW/Audi can associate turbo with cars, but they certainly cannot stop anyone else from advertising that their cars have turbos.
I think it's perception. I read an article (I think at Edmunds) about how turbos were coming back, and they never even mentioned Saab (where turbos haven't really come back because they never went away). Turbos at one time were not the thing to have. Now, they seem like fun to the younger crowd, although older people still seem to prefer cylinders. My dad even asked me if I thought that the 4-cylinder in my car had enough power! (And I own a Viggen -- it's got pleny of power.) I said that I'd take him for a ride in the summer, and he could decide for himself.
