A while back on the 9-5 board, an owner posted the pictures of his totaled 9-5 after he was hit head on by a pickup truck going about 40 miles an hour. Following the impact he was able to open the door and walk away, with only a scratch on his face from his eyeglasses and the airbag. Have you ever heard anyone with a similar experience in any Japanese car? I haven't!
A few years ago my son was hit head on by a Jeep Grand Cherokee. His 1990 900S was totaled, but he was able to open the door and walk away unscathed following the collision. So I think that buying a car boils down to what you want, the "legend" of Japanese (in our case it was a legend when our Toyota's crankshaft went out at 125,000 miles) reliability, or the ability to survive a big time crash in a Saab. This is an easy question for me (and most of the other posters on these boards) to answer.
