The Winter-Os were developed late in O-history by
rich (mostly) UK eccentrics with a lot of time on
their hands in the Swiss and other Alps.
So you can well imagine what the first luge, bobsled,
and skeleton events must have looked like.
At the core of the O-movement, you had rules and big
money in the hands of the European upper crust, including
royalty. Hence, the exclusivity, secrecy, and power.
I did a rough calculation. 111 medals EU; 51 medals North
America. Not that it matters because many of these sports
have no wide audience in NA but this will give you some idea.
In Norway, for example, the 15K cross country is the
equivalent of the Superbowl for the Norse. If they fail to
win it, it is a national disgrace.
CBC pointed out that Winter-Os have a hard edge about them
lacking in the Summer-Os. Winter events are more extreme and
the results of failure more catastrophic, as witness some of
the short track speed skating falls.
Being a bobsled volunteer, I was always sorely disappointed
that an auto manufacturer didn't sponsor that sport. I guess
they just don't see bang for the buck. Now that extreme sport
seems to be all the rage, perhaps they will reconsider.
