Funny but I have had to re-attach the driver's side mirrors to both my 1986-900 and 1992-9000. Luckily I had my hand securely on the glass when it came loose both times.
I believe that 3M Heavy Duty Trim Adhesive in a spray can is the best. It is an industrial strength rubber cement that you apply to both surfaces after they have been cleaned. Allow to dry. Position glass exactly the first time!
Only drawback is that you must mask off and cover the car near the mirror housing. The stuff comes out in a stream which is easier to control than regular spray paint. Solvents like turpentine should remove any overspray.
3M makes a light weight trim version as well as heavy duty. Find and buy the heavy duty stuff to be sure.
