Audi/ VW W-12 engine failures

The newest European Car mag has a short paragraph about Audi's woes. This radical new engine is currently only available in the big A8. Audi reports an 87% engine failure rate in these cars "in the field" (meaning in the real world, not a test track). The crankshaft is failing - _not_ a minor problem. Apparently the stress analysts screwed this one up big time.
I think if I had bought one of these cars, I would insist the dealer exchange it for an A8 with a different engine.
I wonder how many of these engine failures occurred at 150 mph on the Autobahn, and what the owner thought when the engine quit turning with a bang and cloud of oil? And how many serious accidents resulted?
Comments? I would especially like to hear from our German friends - maybe this has made the local news. I really like Audis, but this kind of bothers me....
