I went to the Toyota dealership to pick up an application for a summer job and I was looking at the new Matrix prettty interesting but all were automatics. After I went in one of the dealers approached me and complimented my car(the saab) and just started a casual conversation with me, he knew I had no intentions of purchasing a car so we start talking about cars and stuff and we get on the new celicas and I told him that I was kind of dissapointed that this "sports car" never seems to have a manual tranny in the GT-s model in the dealer stock. They are always loaded and have automatics and the lower power (140hp) GT version is quite plentiful with manuals. The guy tells me it is my lucky day and goes and grabs a set of keys. we walk out and he tosses me the keys and points at a red 2002 celica gt-s and to my chagrin it just so happens to be a 6 speed! We hop in the car is all decked out it has the "fast body" package or whatever(you know the one you see in the commercials) it has leather, cd its pretty nice and tips the scales at $23,900. So we start off and my first complaint is the shifting seems so imprecise, its extremely hard to find first gear when you are downshifting, upshifting isnt bad at all but it is a pain to downshift. Second...yes Toyotas Vvtl-i is remarkable just as good if not better then hondas vtech however this car had no low down torque all the power was had at above 6,500rpm the cam switchover is right around 6,500 or so and then the car just SURGES to the redline i think it was like 8, 200. Well the first time the dealer tells me to get on it i shift at 6,700 just after the cam switch...and the motor bogged way down and then as soon as it got to 6,500 it took off again. He told me to hold it longer so I did the 1-2 at 7,900 and the powerband remained in the second cam making the car a lot quicker.

I dont know what this has to do with anything but I guess it just goes to further prove that i am pampered by the torque available downlow in the saab. Man we have cool cars!
