my friends swear by the tappan zee. But, every time, and I mean every time (12x maybe over past couple years) i got nailed, bad. like an hour to cross. guess I know how to pick the accident days. I always have better luck over the gw (maybe cuz of radio, below). but this is pre 9-11. also may be cuz I go north from jersey to boston.

anyway, as soon as you can get the station in connecticut, tune into 1010 WINS on am or 880 WCBS on am. 1010 give traffic on the 1's (:11,:21,:31,etc.) and 880 gives it on the 8's. all day, 24 hours a day. switch form one to the next and back again. while the tappan zee is not always included, they always give the gw. it may help you decide. also, if coming down thru the ny thruway during weekday, watch for rock blasting between albany and ny/nj border. have heard they shut down thruway for like 15-30 mins, then resume traffic, then again hours later.

if tappan zee, take thruway south to GSP (garden state parkway, grren and gold round logo) take GSP south to like exit 130 to switch over to turnpike
south. if taking gw, go directly to turnpike south. western or eastern spur no matter. truck lanes usually quicker. once again, 1010/880 will give you the info on which lanes of turnpike quicker (western v. eastern up north, truck or car lanes rest of way).

never get off turnpike if going to florida. i-95 thru philly is dead waste of time. delaware memorial bridge from NJ turnpike to delaware turnpike is way to go.

and for heavens sake - GET EZPass! even if you only use it for this trip!
