Thatching the yard?

I need to thatch the yard and lay down some seed but is there anything else that needs to be done? Do you just thatch and throw seed down or do you need to lay hay or something like that over the seed? Also what seed is the best to use? I know this is off topic but I was hoping for someone might know the answers.
