Since the engine works and the self-propelled system doesn't, then I would take it back. The engine on those things should last for ever, it's the mower deck/self-propulsion and other parts that will fail. About a year ago, I bought a John Deere JS63 at Home Depot. It has been an excellent mower. It has a 6.5 OHV B&S engine, A thicker gauge steel deck, and 3 speed rear-drive (I know, a SAAB mower would be FWD, but for mowing RWD works better) self-propulsion system. I struggled between this and the Honda mower in the same price range ($450), but chose the Deere because I'm a redneck and it more HP and more bag capacity. Cub-Cadet also has a nice model with swivel wheels in front. I think it's worth the money to spend on a good mower, if you buy a $100 mower at WalMart, you'll be buying one every couple of years. Just do your research and check the warranty. Also, Home Depot was offering to extend the warranty on Honda mowers and additional year as well as free financing...heard that ad on the radio.
