Firstly, the same rules as appraising any old car apply. Specifically, the engine should last forever, the bodywork should be good for a 23 year old car, one thing to watch for is rust at the seams and also for the floors to rot from the inside to the outside. The automatics can blow their (internal) tranny oil cooler, and there is no real way of knowing if this is in danger of happening without ripping out the tranny and putting it back - not worth the trouble until it actually goes! The interiors can wear (dash cracks, fading, broken trim pieces, dash knobs). Try turbobricks.com and brickboard.com for Volvo info. I am inclined to agree with Alex that the $ is a bit high - considering that the car is 23 years old, I would say more like $600-800. If it has very good tires, recent brakes, belts, etc, it could be worth a premium though, especially if the overall condition is very good. After all, four tires, front & rear brake pads, exhaust system, and four struts/shocks will cost more than the asking price on this car. If these things are all fairly new, it is not such a bad deal. Good luck, and of course ask for receipts.
