Did 6days outpatient psych (mostly shadowing, not doing) at a similar school & residence for the same population [disliked psych, but experience was good]. The best yield came from talking about what the kids like/dislike & "what did you do yesterday" re: activities, lunch, etc; ask about family relationships and school friends. Sounds simple but can go on for ever. Remember these kids operate not on a "dumb" level but rather a very "young" level; a preteen might have the reasoning ability of a 1yo and that's hard for fully developed people to grasp. An autistic child may/may not be relatively high functioning in some respects, but w very poor ability to articulate it and socialize. A given near-adult Down's kid might operate at 5yo, and that's actually pretty capable. So anyway keep it simple.

When asking a question, emphasize how the event/person/something affects the *student* (this is simple and direct) and remember that assigning "good" and "bad" to the same activities might be over their heads as this is an abstract idea (good vs bad). Quickly you'll see on what level different kids can understand you, think, and then express themselves. It's pretty humbling. Ah yeah, and give a lot of thought to how your words or giving treats can reinforce both good *and* bad behavior, so watch out. E.g. taking a kid out of the room for biting and going for a walk to "cool down" is often reinforcing b/c kids like the added attention even if being admonished; instead make them do without something they like in isolation (miss music class or afternoon treats or whatever) - they don't like that.
