they can teach the dog NEVER to bark, which may not be quite what you want. You can try a training collar - use it the first time when you are home for a long weekend. It has a remote to deliver the shock. You can judge if the situation merits barking (someone on your property) or not. Dog should get the idea within a couple of days. In any case, get one with variable shock level. The same basic technology can work on the back door - in this case you set up a sensor so that if the dog goes within x feet of the area he gets a shock. However, this must NOT be the door the dog is usually taken outside from or the dog will become neurotic. Finally, deal with just one bad habit at a time. Have you considered an invisible fence? Dog might be bored.
